Heavily influenced by 70's and 80's soul, reggae, funk from a full calendar of family events, socials and community events. My mother was very active in the community, in the church and worked as a district nurse so mum knew everyone! and we were always tagging along to some event or other. What interestd me most was always the music. 80's hip hop meant electronica had arrived and it wasnt too long before immersion in the UK 90's underground thing took hold. Everything from Shaka to Shakatatak. DIY to DNB and Touring with TGU through the late 90's and early noughts then opened up genres, ears and attitudes. WOMAD was a regular pilgramage across town. Reconnecting with cultures ancient, deep, expressive and changing.
Working with artists who regularly sought to step out of the ordinary was an excellent time and probably set the direction of my listening, and changed the way I engaged with mmusic, culture and everything else. So for many years i just did my own thing. Toured Europe. Played Australia and Canada and generally avoided the UK's industrial music complex. Playing mainly at my local - The Global Cafe for over 15 years. I was always the promoters wild card - and almost always expressed surprise "I didnt think I'd like it as much" was a common review. Wether its the Melkveg in Amsterdam or The Roxy in Prauge or The MAffia Club in Reggio Emillio. I never knew why people were so surprised till i started promoting a little bit myself and realised that good producers are often not great for getting a dancefloor feeling nice. You see at heart I'm a collaborater. I work best in amongst it all. Sharing the vibe and selecting new elements to add in.
Even though I spent alot of my youmger years around soundsystems, DJ's and MC's I didnt even touch turntables till I was 30. Working in in a bar as one of various jobs between sessioning with TGU. Claire the venue manager asked me to play a thursday night. i'd bring in CD's that I'd pick up while touring and give them a listen in the bar. So now faced with a well battered pair of 1210's well started collecting vinyl as well didnt I.
And thats when the trouble started.....
